UPDATE: New York State Court of Appeals Limits Length of Briefs

The New York State Court of Appeals has issued a Notice to the Bar announcing amendments to its Rules of Practice. Effective June 22, 2016, principal briefs filed in regular appeals, certified questions and on reviews of determinations of the state Commission on Judicial Conduct will be subject to a 14,000 word limit.

Under the new rules, Reply Briefs, Amicus Curiae Briefs and briefs responding to Amicus Curiae Briefs will be limited to 7,000 words. Requests to file oversized briefs must be made by letter addressed to the clerk of the cour demonstrating good cause.
